Finnish STEAM Education and Holistic Well-being: A Workshop for Japanese Educators

On Tuesday 28th of January, Experience Workshop hosted an enriching workshop for 13 educators from Japan, including primary, lower-secondary, and upper-secondary teachers from both public and private schools. The group also included representatives from a municipal education department, educational general incorporated associations, and freelance educators. The workshop, held at Crazy Town Jyväskylä, offered a deep dive into Finnish STEAM education, robotics, and holistic well-being in schools.

An Environment That Supports Well-being and Learning

Well-being and Learning

The final session was led by Jukka Sinnemäki, teacher, researcher, education developer, and author of MeBook. Sinnemäki explored how school practices can be transformed to better support student well-being and learning.

Key topics included:

  • What needs to change in school practices and why?
  • Key features of a supportive learning environment: Safety, support, flexibility, and adaptability.
  • Identifying missing elements or practices that could help students thrive in school.
  • The power of students: Empowering learners to take an active role in their education.

Sinnemäki’s insights provided practical strategies for creating learning environments that prioritize both academic success and emotional well-being.

The workshop was not only an opportunity for Japanese educators to learn about Finnish educational practices but also a platform for cross-cultural dialogue and collaboration. Participants left inspired with new ideas and tools to implement in their own schools, promoting a global exchange of innovative educational approaches.
