Art, Science & Sustainability in STEAM Education

The “World at Play” was an extraordinary exhibition of STEAM education at the Jyväskylä Art Museum (2023-2024), bringing together art, mathematics, and sustainability through the creative expressions of South African and Finnish youth. Organized in collaboration with Nelson Mandela University, the University of Jyväskylä, and Experience Workshop Oy, this exhibition was part of the MathArt Project, using art to inspire young learners in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM).

What’s inside the exhibition of STEAM education?

  • 28 inspiring artworks by South African youth, created for a MathArt competition exploring connections between mathematics, personal experiences, and global sustainability.
  • STEAM learning experiences for Finnish children, fostering creativity and critical thinking.
  • Workshops & interactive programs where Finnish youth created their own MathArt pieces inspired by South African artworks.
  • Presentation of the book: MathArt Expressions by South African Youth: Creative Visual Connections with Mathematics.
  • AI-generated art explorations, discussing its role in collaboration and sustainability.
