STEAM, an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics, offers an approach that fosters both creative and analytical skills. The integration of STEAM into preschool education not only supports children’s cognitive growth but also their social and emotional skills.

Through playful learning and hands-on activities, preschoolers can explore fundamental concepts from the various STEAM fields. They learn to solve problems, think critically, and express their creativity. Activities such as building blocks, experimenting with water and sand, or creating art projects provide numerous opportunities to spark children’s curiosity and foster their interest in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).


The early introduction of STEAM not only promotes learning but also teamwork and communication skills, as children often work in groups to achieve common goals. By collaborating, they learn to appreciate different perspectives and develop solutions together. These skills are crucial for their later academic and professional success.


This introduction makes it clear that STEAM in preschool is not just an educational method but also a vital strategy for preparing children for a complex and dynamic future. It lays the foundation for lifelong learning and fosters a generation of creative and critical thinkers.

Before I came to Finland, I knew nothing about STEAM. I first encountered the field of STEAM here in Finland. Now, it has become the focus of my work. Practically, this can be implemented very easily. Many natural materials can be incorporated, allowing children to experience their environment in a different and more intense way. In our preschool group, I helped set up a STEAM corner. Additionally, we have now introduced regular STEAM weeks.
