From 14 to 15 of April, a group of 36 high school students, three teachers, and the principal YAU Chun Yin from TWGHs Kap Yan Directors’ College in Hong Kong embarked on a two-day educational tour in Jyväskylä, Finland. The program was organized by Experience Workshop.
Entitled The Finnish Education Model: Pathway from High School to Higher Education, the program offered an intensive experience into Finland’s renowned education system, focusing on autonomous learning, innovative teaching methods, and pathways to higher education.
Experiencing Autonomous Learning in Finland
The visit began at Schildt Upper Secondary School, where the delegation was warmly welcomed by Vice Principal Mika Rantala, Global Partnerships Manager Pauliina Holm, and English teacher Ulla Luoto. The students received an introduction to Schildt’s educational philosophy, emphasizing Finland’s student-centered approach.

Small groups explored the school’s facilities and classrooms, observing how Finnish students engage in self-directed and collaborative learning.

Under the guidance of PE teacher Roope Kastarinen, students participated in sports and teamwork exercises at Vehkahalli sports hall, fostering cross-cultural connections.

The day concluded with a snack and a group discussion in the auditorium, where students shared their insights on Finland’s autonomy-driven education model.

Pathways to Higher Education in Finland
The second day focused on higher education opportunities, offering students an inside view into university life in Finland.
Led by Dr. Kristof Fenyvesi, students engaged in a hands-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) workshop, exploring interdisciplinary learning.

Tereza Pruknerová provided valuable guidance on how to apply to Finnish universities, covering undergraduate and postgraduate opportunities.

The group met international university students from the student association ESN Jyväskylä, discussing study experiences, campus life, and career prospects in Finland.

After the final reflection session, certificates were awarded to everyone to commemorate participation. Experience Workshop received special gifts from the school leadership. The tour concluded with a walk through the historic campus of the University of Jyväskylä, where students learned about the roots of Finnish education.
