Teacher Training Course in Finnish Education

From April 7th to 12th, a group of 22 educators from Spain, Hungary, Romania, Germany, Austria, and Belgium came together in Jyväskylä for an inspiring Erasmus+ teacher training course on “Essentials of Finnish Education – Focus on Sustainability.”

Meet the Team

Organized by Experience Workshop and led by trainer Jukka Lehtoranta, the program offered training on Finland’s world-renowned education system, with hands-on learning, cultural experiences, and a strong emphasis on sustainability in teaching.

A Visit to the University of Jyväskylä

Professor Pasi Ikonen shared insights into craft and technology education in Finland during a visit to the teacher training center of the university. His lecture provided a deeper understanding of how hands-on learning and innovation shape Finnish schools.

Outdoor Learning in Action

The group put theory into practice by designing and testing outdoor learning activities at Mäki-Matti Family Park. This experience explored Finland’s belief in nature-based education, where children and students learn through exploration and play in natural environments.

The Training Program

Sustainable Solutions: Building Warka Towers

One of the most engaging workshops involved constructing Warka Tower models—a sustainable, low-tech solution for water harvesting. This activity demonstrated how simple, eco-friendly innovations can be incorporated into classroom learning

Reflections in Nature

The training concluded with an outdoor session in Finnish nature, reinforcing the connection between environmental education and sustainable living. Teachers left with fresh ideas on how to bring these practices into their own schools.

Finnish Culture & Sauna Tradition

No visit to Finland is complete without a traditional sauna experience! The group relaxed and bonded in this quintessential Finnish setting.

Beyond the structured program, participants were treated to two unforgettable natural phenomena—the northern lights and “takatalvi” (a late return of winter snow)—adding to a real Finnish experience.
