Den 10 december besökte vårt Hallå STEAM-team Mänttä gymnasium i julstämning. Vårt program kombinerade som vanligt matematik och historia med det svenska språket.
Den mycket ovanliga skoldagen öppnades med en samling i gymnastiksalen. Ämnet för föreläsningarna var rymdforskningens historia, inklusive tidiga fantasier om rymden. Johan Stén höll först en väldokumenterad föreläsning om upptäcktshistorien för planeterna i vårt solsystem, vilket ämne han själv forskat i, och nämnde även det aktuella ämnet exoplaneter.
Osmo Pekonen fortsatte med en berättelse om science fiction -litteraturen om flygning och nämnde sådana klassiker som Johannes Keplers Somnium (1634), Francis Godwins Man i Moone (1638) och Jules Vernes De la Terre à la Lune (1865) – inte att förglömma Selma Lagerlöfs klassiska Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige. Den epokgörande kortfilmen Le voyage dans la Lune (1902) av Georges Méliès visades. Tills slut sjöng Stén och Pekonen tillsammans ett par svenska julsånger med tomteluvor på huvudet.
På eftermiddagen delade teamet på sig i två klassrum och organiserade kreativa matematik- och konstverkstäder, i vilka mer än etthundra elever deltog.
I de av Kristóf Fenyvesi och Johan Stén ledda matematik- och konstverkstäderna skapade eleverna olika slags symmetriska mönster och strukturer. En rik variation av snökristaller, gemensamt designade magiska mattor och färgglada tessellationer uppstod i elevernas händer.
Eleverna fick också testa olika STEAM-modelleringssatser – såsom 4Dframe från Sydkorea, Carawonga från Ungern och Pentiles från New York – för första gången och med fantastiska resultat!
I Osmo Pekonens verkstad var ämnet som diskuterades geometri och topologi för konvexa polyedrar. Den stympade ikosaedern, som motsvarar mönstret för den klassiska svartvita fotbollen, fungerade som fallstudie. Eleverna lyckades väl i att konstruera prototyper, och i båda grupperna som deltog i workshopen återupptäcktes den topologiska Euler-formeln H[örn] – K[anter] + S[sidor] = 2 under Pekonens vägledning.

On December 10, the Hallå STEAM team visited the Secondary School in Mänttä-Finland (Mäntän lukio), providing a Christmas-spirited program which combined mathematics, history, and Swedish language.
The highly unusual school day was opened by a gathering in the sports hall where the common topic was the history of space research, including early fantasies about space. Johan Stén first gave a well-documented lecture about the discovery history of the planets of our solar system, on which he has written extensively, also mentioning the hot topic of exoplanets.
Osmo Pekonen continued with a short history of science fiction about flying, mentioning such classics as Johannes Kepler’s Somnium (1634), Francis Godwin’s Man in the Moone (1638), or Jules Verne’s De la Terre à la Lune (1865) – not forgetting Selma Lagerlöf’s classic Nils Holgersson’s Wonderful Journey through Sweden (Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige). Stén and Pekonen also performed a couple of Swedish Christmas carols, wearing Santa hats.
In the afternoon, the team divided into two classrooms and organized creative mathematics&arts workshops, which were attended by a total of more than 100 students.
In the mathematics&arts workshops run by Kristóf Fenyvesi and Johan Stén, the students created and studied various symmetric patterns and structures. A rich variation of individual snowflake crystals, collaboratively designed magic carpets and colorful tilings have grown under the hands of the students.
They tried various STEAM modelling kits – such as 4Dframe from South Korea, Carawonga from Hungary and Pentiles from New York – for the first time, and with amazing results!
Meanwhile, in Osmo Pekonen‘s workshop the topic under discussion was the geometry and topology of convex polyhedra, using the truncated icosahedron (which corresponds to the pattern of the classical black-and-white soccerball) as a case study. The students successfully constructed prototypes, and in both groups that attended the workshop, the topological Euler formula V – E + F = 2 was rediscovered under Pekonen’s guidance.
