STEAM Curriculum in Practice: Build a Bridge

The Erasmus+ STEAM-Connect project offers the opportunity to benefit from the synergies between teachers in different national, cultural and social environments. The project aims to connect teachers of different subjects, parents, artists, educators and researchers from different disciplines to develop innovative transdisciplinary workshops and pedagogies together to enhance collaborative STEAM learning for students of all abilities and backgrounds. The STEAM lessons plan below has been developed as part of the STEAM Connect project, and is available for all teachers, parents and educators who are committed to multidisciplinary learning.

Topic: Build a Bridge

Overview:

Let’s build a one-meter bridge with papers, cartons and a rope! How to build the strongest bridge of the classroom?

Related subjects: Mathematics, Arts, Architecture, Physics
Grade: 15-16 years
Total activity time: 8 hours
Learning objectives: Developing of spatial awareness, expanding and applying knowledge of surface, volume, pressure, force

This lesson plan has been developed by teachers of 2College Cobbenhagenlyceum Tilburg (The Netherlands), Mariagaarde Instituut Westmalle (Belguim), and Kardinaal Van Roey Instituut Vorselaar (Belgium)

STEAM subject elements:

  • Science: About force, pressure and weight
  • Technology: 3D modeling of the bridge
  • Engineering: The stability of the bridge. How to create? How do you make couplings?
  • Arts: Architectural construction that is realistic
  • Mathematics: Sizes of cylinders and triangles. Measurement of the bridge (length, heigh)
