Educational Tour to Finland: Banqiao School Explore Finnish Education

A group of 11 students, dedicated teachers, and school leaders from the middle and high school of Banqiao, Beijing, recently participated in an educational tour to Finland, between August 17 and August 23. The program was designed to explore the secrets behind Finland’s world-renowned education system, focusing on innovative learning methodologies, university preparation, and cultural exchange. The journey took the delegation across two Finnish cities, Helsinki and Jyväskylä, blending academic discovery with cultural experiences.

Cultural Experience in Helsinki City

The adventure began in the capital city, Helsinki, where the group was immediately integrated in the Finnish way of life. A walk along Töölönlahti (Töölö Bay) offered a moment of calm before a comprehensive sightseeing tour. The group explored the city’s iconic landmarks, from the modern architectural marvel of the Oodi Library—a symbol of Finland’s commitment to accessible knowledge and community space—to the Helsinki Cathedral. Later, they visited University of Helsinki’s inner-city campus with a local student guide from ESN Uni Helsinki, the Chinese students learned about the environment of a top-tier European university.

Autonomous Learning in Finland

The academic core of the tour began with an introduction to the Finnish school system by Associate Professor Najat Ouakrim-Soivio from the University of Jyväskylä. This session provided the context for everything that followed, explaining the principles of equity, trust, and student well-being that supports Finland’s educational success. Immediately putting theory into practice, the participants engaged in a dynamic, AI-driven project-based learning workshop led by trainer Jukka Lehtoranta. This hands-on session demonstrated how artificial intelligence can be seamlessly integrated into collaborative, student-led projects to foster critical thinking and creativity.

School Visits

A highlight moment of the tour was the visit to Kuokkala School. Here, Banqiao students were paired with Finnish mentor students, providing a look into a typical school day. They toured the premises, visited classrooms, and held discussions with the principal Markku Juhola. The theme of future studies continued with a practical presentation on how to apply to a Finnish university, followed by a friendly table discussions with current Finnish university students from ESN Jyväskylä who shared firsthand insights into academic life.

The next day, the group visited the upper secondary school of Muurame. Observing classes and participating in a feedback session with the principal Aki Puustinen provided a valuable perspective on the final stages of secondary education before university. The educational journey was formally recognized in a certificate ceremony awarded by Dr. Kristof Fenyvesi. To finish the day, the group visited the Aalto2 museum to learn about the Finnish design and innovation.

Forest School and Finnish Cultural Experience

In Jyväskylä, the delegation experienced the unique Finnish connection to nature. A visit to the Könkkölä farm and an authentic “forest class” highlighted how outdoor and experiential learning are integral parts of the curriculum, promoting environmental understanding and practical skills. This was finalized by Finnish cultural experience: relaxing in a traditional sauna followed by outdoor grilling, offering a perfect opportunity for informal bonding and cultural exchange. The group also enjoyed a walk around the historic University of Jyväskylä campus, designed by the famous architect Alvar Aalto, blending educational history with architectural beauty.

Final Days in Helsinki

The tour concluded back in Helsinki, where the group enjoyed a walk to the Helsinki harbour, explored the market hall filled with local delicacies, and enjoyed a guided tour of the UNESCO World Heritage site, Suomenlinna fortress. After some souvenir shopping, the final visit was to the Finnish Science Centre Heureka, a place of scientific discovery that summarized the tour’s theme: that education is engaging, hands-on, and inspiring.
