Early April, Experience Workshop organised an Erasmus+ student mobility and job shadowing for the István Szegedi Kis High School from Hungary’s city of Békés. Their Finnish partner school was Laukaa High School in Central Finland. This six-day program provided a unique opportunity for students and teachers to experience themselves in the Finnish education system and observe aspects of sustainability, inclusion and digitalization in the school.
Finnish School Life
During the five days spent at the Laukaa school, visitors could experience a very positive school atmosphere. As the screenshot from the last day’s feedback meeting shows, Hungarian students noticed how much Finnish students were enjoying their school days. See more feedback by clicking on the Padlet link.
High school students in Finland have a lot of freedom to choose which subjects they would like to learn and they have a high degree of freedom also to schedule their matriculation exams. High school lasts for three years but might be extended to four or even five years. They are not expected to take all exams in a row.
STEAM and Sustainability: The Warka water tower
Joined by their Finnish peers, Hungarian students built the Warka water tower in the hallway of the school. This hands-on activity promotes creativity and teamwork and also highlights the importance of integrating science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) in education.
We thank English teacher Laura Poranen and Arts teacher Mirka Havinga from Laukaa school for their warm hospitality and to all participants for making this exchange a lasting experience.
Free Time and Finnish Traditions
After school, the program included local activities such as a sightseeing walk in Jyväskylä, a sauna visit, a frisbee golf tournament and a walk on one of the nature trails leading to a nice grilling place in the forest.
The student group mobility, the teacher trainings and the job shadowing mobilities were realized in the frameworks of the Erasmus+ KA121 programme.
