STEAM Curriculum in Practice: Developing a New Sport

The Erasmus+ STEAM-Connect project offers the opportunity to benefit from the synergies between teachers in different national, cultural and social environments. The project aims to connect teachers of different subjects, parents, artists, educators and researchers from different disciplines to develop innovative transdisciplinary workshops and pedagogies together to enhance collaborative STEAM learning for students of all abilities and backgrounds. The STEAM lessons plan below has been developed as part of the STEAM Connect project, and is available for all teachers, parents and educators who are committed to multidisciplinary learning.

Topic: Developing a New Sport

Purpose:

The student learning goals are to develop a new sport they can play on the playground of the school during the breaks. They learn to collaborate in the team, communicate and make steps. They learn to combine the skills they learn by Art, Math and Music in the project. There will be an overlap between the different subjects.

This lesson plan has been developed by teachers of 2College Cobbenhagenlyceum Tilburg (The Netherlands).

STEAM Subject Elements:

Science (Physics): involves choice of material, speed and weight of objects
Technology: depending on the sport students should include a technological component. E.g.a digital scoreboard
Engineering: sport equipment has to be engineered as a model or prototype
Arts: students design logo, clothes, sports materials and ‘playfield’ FB Dance could be seen both as art and sports
Mathematics: there are calculations involved in making the game fair and playable. Then students need to work out a how many players can participate in a certain area

Previous knowledge needed for the activity:

  • Basic knowledge about sports and games
  • Math: making calculations of the field size (measurements in m/m2)
  • Physics: basics about the quantities speed and force
  • Music: some experience with music and tunes during sports or games
  • Art: knowledge of Basic elements and the design circle besides some drawing skills
