The Experience Workshop Movement for the Experience-Centered Education of Mathematics visits the Kaposvár University for the third time. Secondary school and high school students of Kaposvár city (Hungary) and students of the Grammar School Petra Preradovića, Virovitica (Croatia) are coming together to experience that the connections between mathematics and the arts is a source of discoveries, inspiration and creativity.

The art exhibit provides a survey of the artwork of Robert Fathauer from 1993 to 2011. His work is inspired by mathematics. The earliest works in the exhibit are Escher-like tessellations hand printed using silk-screen techniques. Some of his tessellation artworks are fractal in character and were created with the aid of a computer. There are other fractals in the exhibit as well, from a fractal self portrait to complex knots created using fractal techniques to fractal trees created using photographic building blocks.
Robert Fathauer received the Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Denver in 1982 with a double major in Physics and Mathematics. In 1987, he received a Ph.D. from Cornell University in Electrical Engineering. From 1987 to 1994 he worked as a research scientist at the NASA/Caltech Jet Propulsion Laboratory. His interest in the work of M.C. Escher led him to design his own Escher-like tessellations and create art prints from them starting in the early 1990’s. In 1993 he started a business called Tessellations that specializes in puzzles and other products that combine mathematics and art. Over time, his artistic interests have expanded to include fractals and knots. He has written articles on Escher-like tessellations, fractal tessellations, and fractal knots, and his books include Designing and Drawing Tessellations and Fractal Trees.

OPENING PRESENTATION
08.40-09.30 Puzzles and Art Based on Tessellations and Fractals (in English, Hungarian translation)

There are many examples of tessellations in manmade objects and in nature. The Dutch artist M.C. Escher created tessellations in which the individual tiles are recognizable motifs such as lizards and birds. Designs of this sort can be used in artworks and also as a basis for puzzles. The non-repeating Penrose tiles are particularly interesting and allow an endless number of different patterns. Fractals are another type of mathematical structure that is found in nature. Tessellations and fractals can be combined to create unique and beautiful designs. Fractal concepts can also be applied to create intricate knots possessing self similarity. They can also be used to create a wide variety of trees, where the mathematical rules employed determine the shape of the tree.

Workshop #2.:
SQUIDS AND RAYS: GianTile WORKSHOP (in English, Hungarian translation)

In the workshop, students will explore tessellations using two different shapes of tiles, squids and rays. They will learn what a vertex is and how vertices can be used to characterize a set of tiles. They will build the different types of vertices allowed by the squids-and-rays tiles. They will also learn the different types of symmetry possible in tessellations and construct squid-and-ray tilings with each type of symmetry. Large tessellations with five-fold rotational symmetry will also be built.

Number of participants: 30 students.

 

Workshop #3.:
MATHEMATICS, ARTS AND GEOGEBRA (in Croatian, Hungarian translation)
by Jasminka Viljevac, teacher of the Petar Preradović High School (Virovitica, Croatia)

Geometrical and numerical exercises will be solved by different method: calculation, measuring and using the Geogebra program. The Christmass Tree of the Kaposvár University will be decorated using the result of the solved exercises.

THE VASARELY PLAYHOUSE: LOOK AND COMBINE! (in English, Hungarian translation)

Many of Victor Vasarely’s (1906-1997) works are based on the modularity and construction of different visual objects from prefabricated basic elements. In this workshop we would like to illustrate a few of Vasarely’s main visual concepts: the use of transparent elements in sculpture, the recombination of tiles for obtaining different patterns and the use of Op-art effects. For this we propose three constructions: production of a hypercube from a transparent hypercube net, 3D transparent Op-cubes by folding and gluing printed transparent elements, and an Op-tile game. Participants can thus explore the mathematical dimensions of Victor Vasarely’s world and have a memorable glimpse of Jablan and Fenyvesi’s collaboration on the field of experience-centered education of mathematics and the pragmatist aesthetics of interdisciplinarity.
