Oppilaat saivat tehtäväkseen rakentaa “klassisen jalkapallon” (eli matematiikan kielellä typistetyn ikosaedrin) mallin joko Suomen sinivalkoisissa tai Ruotsin sinikeltaisissa väreissä (Ruotsi voitti kisan). Luonnossa typistetyn ikosaedrin rakenne esiintyy fullereenimolekyylissa, josta grafeeni, yksi luonnon vahvimmista aineista, muodostuu.

Football mathematics in Jyväskylä
November 4 was the annual theme day of “Awesome Mathematics” – the Finnish day of Maths. On November 4, the Hallå STEAM! team visited the Christian School in Jyväskylä to meet ninth graders who already knew Swedish quite well. In the class, the possible patterns of the ball surface were introduced, using the so-called “classic” pattern of football as an example, which, however, did not become common until the 1970s. The students were given the task to build a model of “classical football” (i.e. truncated icosahedron) in either the blue-white colors of Finland or the blue-yellow colors of Sweden (Sweden won the race).
In nature, the structure of the truncated icosahedron occurs in the fullerene molecule from which graphene, one of nature’s strongest substances, is formed. The confluence with Swedish-language culture came from Tim Sparv. There was also a talk on the significance of the upcoming Gustav II Adolph Memorial Day on 6 November. Farida Nurhasanah, an Indonesian professor of mathematics didactics, also took part in the day’s work.
