With a photo of Kristóf Fenyvesi’s (University of Jyväskylä) 4Dframe math-art activity, Experience Workshop’s approach is referred at YLE News (Finland’s national public service broadcasting company) as a promising example for the revitalization of mathematics education. TIMSS and PISA 2016 results were announced some days ago and the decreasing performance of Finnish students leads to many discussions in Finnish media and society about current tendencies. Experience- and discovery-oriented methods, engagement in collaborative problem-solving activities can be the game-changer in mathematics learning?

Laura Tuohilampi (University of Jyväskylä) and Hannu Salmi (University of Helsinki) education researchers were sharing their views on Finnish students’ reduced interest in mathematics; the growing need for more interactive, cooperative and engaging approaches in mathematics education; and about the potentials of the new Finnish curriculum.
